Lotus Engineering provides vehicle and engine design and application engineering for the use of alternative fuels including alcohols and gaseous fuels such as hydrogen and CNG. We offer a package of services that can include the modification of engine hardware and software, calibration and development of whole fuel systems. Customers are demanding more sustainable fuel choices and alternative fuel vehicle versions provide manufacturers with a low cost, low risk route to market for greener vehicles. This market demand for sustainable fuel choices is being driven by factors such as calls for greater energy security or improved well-to-wheel efficiency, as provided by alcohol fuels. Lotus can provide manufacturers with a route to market for alternative fuel versions of their vehicles. Lotus is a proven leader in alcohol fuels applications as evidenced by the Exige 265E Bio-Fuel and Exige 270E Tri-fuel demonstrators.
The current demand for E85 ethanol blends in markets such as the US exceeds the supply of ethanol available. New fuel blends based on Lotus patents allow a greater proportion of the flex fuel vehicle fleet to be supported with methanol, substituting some of the gasoline and ethanol. This gives a lower carbon footprint gasoline while avoiding supply issues associated with ethanol.
Patented Lotus fuel blending technology will enable the production of methanol, ethanol and gasoline fuel blends that are completely compatible with current production flex fuel vehicles. Importantly across the flex-fuel vehicle fleet, these new fuel blends will use less gasoline and will be better from energy security standpoint.
Petrochemical producers that wish to exploit the growing demand for E85 blends can reduce the overall use of gasoline in fuels for E85 compatible vehicles and reduce the well-to-wheel emissions for this fleet.
